Securing your apartment for under $100

Sometimes there’s this thought going in the back of your mind, wondering if you locked the door or left the stove on. What if you could get some peace of mind knowing exactly when your doors were opened and closed, for a reasonable price?

Wyze ‘smart home’ systems allow you to add cameras, smart lights, smart outlets, smart locks, motion sensors and door contacts to your home for less than you might think. Let’s take a look.

Case Study: Basic apartment

In this example, we’ll assume you live in a 3rd floor apartment. Your apartment has a main entrance that goes out into a common hallways, and a fire escape door.

Wyze has a starter pack now that costs $99, which includes 1 Wyze cam, 3 Wyze smart bulbs, 2 wyze smart plugs, a wyze sense starter kit, and 1 SD card.

Don’t get me wrong, that’s a really good deal, but before we go down that path, let’s take a look at what we’d want for our apartment, ideally.

We have two doors that people can get in. Aside from covering those two doors with contacts and cameras, we don’t really need smart bulbs and outlets to secure the home. These are smart home features, which can always be added on later.

Let’s spec out what we need for this:

  • 2x Wyze Cam V2 – Mounts are included
  • 1x Wyze Sense Kit
  • 2x 32GB SD Cards (Technically optional, but definitely worth it)

The Wyze Sense kit includes 1x Motion sensor and 2x Door contacts. They offer most of these directly from their website.

Wyze Cam V2 – $19.99 each (link to Wyze website)

Wyze Sense kit – $19.99 each (link to Wyze website)

Wyze 32GB SD Card – $9.99 each (link to Wyze website)

You can likely find these SD cards cheaper someplace else, just make sure they are Class 10. Let’s assume we buy all of this from Wyze directly all at once to make sure it’s all good.

What’s the cost at this point? With two cameras, two SD cards, and one sensor kit, our total right now is $79.95 to add camera coverage, door contacts, and a motion sensor to this apartment.
